A Light

A little something I wrote for a challenge. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

No matter how much I wanted to follow the bright path ahead of me, I always ended up locked in my dark room filled with unwanted memories and feelings. I wanted to shine and overcome my insecurities, but my light was dim, and my presence forgotten.

Sometimes I could hear cheerful voices and happy chatter. Yet, I was too scared to leave my humble place. Because I already felt comfortable in the dark. But the darkness made me fantasize about other worlds, other lands, and another life. It made me superficially happy.

Then, suddenly a light started circling around me, and a loud and clear voice said, “Don’t be trapped in someone else’s dream.” At first, I felt scared and hopeless because I knew the voice was right. I’ve been living a meaningless life.

Even though it was just a small gesture, the light made me want to do better. But it was hard to suddenly just be happy again. Yet, another light started filling my dark room, and a smooth voice said, “Your presence can give happiness. I hope you remember that.”

Hope started to fill my core. For the first time after a long time, I felt eager to work hard again on myself. But a new start is always hard. Scared and not knowing what to do, a light approached me and said, “Please don’t be afraid, don’t worry yourself. The end and beginning, beginning and end are connected.” So, not fearing the beginning, I left to seek a happier ending.

Still, seeking a better ending did not go as smoothly as I thought. The lights were still following me, but sometimes I felt tired. Until another sparkling light appeared before me. It said, “I hope you know your limits well. But don’t stay within those limits. Overcome the limits each day.” And it was right. If I keep going every day, little by little, the happy ending can get closer.

But sometimes, I would wonder if walking through the path was the only thing I needed. Because sometimes it felt dull. Lost in my thoughts, I hadn’t realized that another bright light kept following me. Walking beside me, it said, “Living without passion is like being dead.” And, indeed, that’s what I was missing. I needed to find my true purpose.

Finding a purpose sounded easy, but when you live in the dark for so long, it gets difficult to see the world. As I was walking aimlessly on the path, another light came to me and said, “Go on your path, even if you live for a day.” And that’s when I decided to do that. Because as long as the light stays by my side, my path will be clear, and my passion will ignite.

I finally know that my happily ever after ending is clear and truer. When I move on my path, I feel that my walk has a skip on it and my steps are lighter and livelier. The lights are still following me, but I see another light approaching. It says, “Where you stand now is what defines you.” And I smile because I know that what defines me right now is pure happiness.

As I realized this, the 7 lights had finally stopped following me. I turn to look for them, but instead of 7 lights, I see 7 young men looking at me with a smile. I see them waving and gesturing to me to go on.

And so, I smile and thank them for reminding me how to be happy, how to follow my dreams, and how to be myself again and keep going on my path with a happy smile.
